Introducing The Fonda Family in America — An Illustrated Family History

From New Netherland to Modern America
October 2026
I’m pleased to announce the publication of The Fonda Family in America: An Illustrated Family History, a new, freely available e-book exploring nearly four centuries of Fonda family history in America.
The First Edition, now available on Fonda.org, includes 78 illustrated pages, ten chapters, 95 fully integrated historical endnotes, and a detailed hyperlinked index. Readers can browse the book online or download the complete PDF.

The story begins in seventeenth-century Friesland, in the Netherlands, and follows Jelle Douwes Fonda and Hester Douwes to the Dutch colony of New Netherland. From their early experiences near Fort Orange, the narrative traces the family’s growth through generations of American history.
Across ten chapters, the book explores colonial settlement, life in the Mohawk Valley, the Revolutionary War, westward migration, the Civil War, the development of farms and cities, two world wars, and the changing circumstances of the twentieth century.
Along the way, readers will encounter individuals whose lives illuminate these larger historical events: pioneers, farmers, merchants, soldiers, professionals, and members of the family who achieved national recognition.
The emphasis is not simply on names, dates, and family relationships, but on the experiences of people living through the events that shaped America.
Bringing Family History to Life
For many years, Fonda.org has provided genealogical records, biographical sketches, historical articles, and other resources documenting the Fonda family. The new e-book brings much of that research together in a more accessible narrative format.
The project draws upon genealogical records, historical publications, archival documents, newspaper accounts, family histories, and previously published material from the Fonda website and blog.
One of the challenges was deciding how to transform an extensive genealogical record into a readable historical account without losing sight of documentary evidence. The book includes shorter historical vignettes that explore particular people, incidents, and experiences in greater detail.
Illustrations are another important part of the presentation. Alongside reproductions of historical materials and photographs, specially created color illustrations help readers visualize earlier periods for which suitable contemporary images are scarce. These interpretive illustrations are intended to complement the historical record, not replace it.
The First Edition incorporates 95 consecutively numbered endnotes, placed at the end of their respective chapters. These citations identify historical publications, original documents, archival records, and other supporting evidence. They also distinguish documented facts from later traditions and genealogical interpretations where the available evidence remains incomplete.
The book also includes a Table of Contents and a detailed Index, both with clickable page references in the downloadable PDF for convenient navigation.
A Collaborative Publishing Project
Preparing the book involved much more than assembling existing articles. The historical material was reorganized into a continuous narrative, genealogical relationships were checked, individual stories were developed, and illustrations were selected or created to accompany the text.
Modern digital tools, including artificial intelligence, assisted with drafting, editing, illustration development, document formatting, and preparation of the online and downloadable editions. The underlying family research, historical documentation, editorial decisions, and review of genealogical claims remained central throughout the process.
An extensive citation-verification exercise accompanied preparation of the First Edition. Historical claims were reviewed against published and archival sources, genealogical identifications were qualified where necessary, and the original chapter source lists were consolidated into the integrated endnote system.
The goal was to use these tools to make a substantial body of accumulated research more readable, visually engaging, and accessible to a wider audience while maintaining a clear distinction between historical evidence and interpretation.
An Ongoing Family History
Family history is never entirely finished. Additional documents surface, interpretations change, and new evidence sometimes challenges long-accepted family traditions.
The First Edition reflects an extensive review of the available documentation, with unresolved historical and genealogical questions identified where appropriate. Further discoveries may lead to additional refinements in future editions.
The intention is to maintain the e-book as an evolving companion to the genealogical database and historical resources already available on Fonda.org.

I welcome corrections, additional documentation, family photographs, and historical information that might contribute to future editions.
My hope is that this book will be useful not only to Fonda descendants and genealogical researchers, but also to anyone interested in Dutch-American settlement, the Mohawk Valley, and the experiences of an American family across nearly four centuries.
What began as a genealogical research project continues to grow into something broader: an effort to preserve and share the stories behind the family tree.
