Close to home: Utah crash spurs NH domestic violence survivor to share story
Jo Fonda’s estranged husband crashed plane into Amherst home in 2001
WMUR-TV – Amy Coveno – News Anchor/Reporter – Updated: 12:56 PM EDT Aug 14, 2018
MANCHESTER, N.H. — A Utah man crashed a plane into his own house this week, hours after he allegedly assaulted his wife, bringing back difficult memories for an Amherst woman of a similar tragedy nearly 17 years ago. The pilot, Duane Youd, died in the crash on Monday. His wife and child, who were in the home, survived, despite part of the home becoming engulfed in flames.
On Aug. 25, 2001, Jo Fonda‘s estranged husband flew their private plane into their Amherst home after Fonda filed for a restraining order against him. Fonda’s husband of 20 years died in the crash and destroyed nearly everything they owned, except for a single piece of pottery. “Similar situation where there was a restraining order that was served on my husband and within 12 hours, he had crashed our airplane into our home and burned it to the ground,” Fonda said.
Fonda said she was never physically abused, but her husband was a violent, controlling man. “The banging of a table, you know, the punching of a wall, the ripping off a phone off a wall,” Fonda said.
Fonda feels responsible, she said, to share her story of the warning signs and her strategy with other women who right now are afraid of their partners. She said it starts by getting out of the house. “That is the most dangerous time, right after someone is served a restraining order,” Fonda said.
Fonda said a phone call to a hotline saved her life. She had scrawled the number on a piece of scrap paper that she still has. “It said, ‘pathetic hotline.’ That’s how I felt about the need to reach out for help,” Fonda said.
Fonda’s message to the survivors in Utah is one of love and a shared sisterhood. “She should have never stayed in that house thinking that she was safe,” Fonda said. “My heart goes out to you and I’m so grateful that they did manage to stay safe. It’s a miracle in my mind.”
The memories are difficult to handle, but Fonda said she wants other victims of domestic violence to know that asking for help is what saved her life.
Anyone who is the victim of domestic violence is urged to call New Hampshire’s 24-hour hotline at 1-866-644-3574.

There are numerous ties between the Fonda and Lansing families… having followed very similar paths from Holland to Albany and beyond. There is a new book published about the Lansing family entitled, “The Lansing Family Journey” which “begins with Henry Hudson’s journey to New Netherland and tracks the Dutch Lansing family as it spread out from Albany, New York. There are over 6,000 individuals referenced and 1,000 families tracked. It is a five-volume set of books including an index for easy searching.” The book was written by Bill Lansing and can be obtained from www.xlibris.com/bookstore.
According to my records, there are no less than 18 marriages between Fonda’s and Lansing’s between 1700 and today (listed below). Many of these marriages are documented in the “The Dutch Settlers Society of Albany Yearbook: The Fonda Family“, McConville, Howard A.; Albany, NY; 48:17-20 (1981), 49:28-36 (1984) which can be downloaded here. Several of these individuals are also buried in the recently restored Fonda-Lansing Cemetery located on Rt. 9 in Colonie, which has been highlighted previously on this blog. |

Fourth time lucky?
Jane Fonda to marry again at 71… as her ex-husbands watch on
By Daily Mail Reporter – 06th September 2009Showing no signs of slowing down, actress Jane Fonda is planning to marry for a fourth time at the age of 71 and has invited two of her ex-husbands. Jane will marry Hollywood music producer Richard Perry, 67, who she was introduced to by her actress niece Bridget Fonda a year ago. According to reports Fonda will invite her second and third husbands, former politician Tom Hayden and media mogul Ted Turner, to the wedding, at which Troy Garity, her actor son by Hayden, will give her away. Jane has told friends she is planning an ‘unconventional union’. ‘She made the announcement during a dinner party at the Malibu home of Barbra Streisand and James Brolin, and now it’s the biggest open secret in showbiz.,’ said a friend.
The Oscar winner’s first husband, French director Roger Vadim, who turned her into an international sex symbol in the film Barbarella, died in 2000. A source close to her revealed: ‘After her divorce from Ted, Jane vowed she’d never wed again. ‘But at this point in her life she has learned to trust her gut instincts and her gut tells her that Richard is a keeper. ‘They fit like a glove, clearly love each other, and share a lot of common pastimes, in- cluding a keen interest in politics.’ The source said: “The only sense in which she’s a ‘peacenik’ these days is that she wants peace to rule her entire family. So why not invite her two ex-husbands? She’s friends with both now and Jane wants them to share her happiness.
Jane and her three previous husbands. Her father, Henry Fonda, married five times and her brother, Peter Fonda, has married twice.

Some interesting information on our Anneke Jans connection…
(connection verified through references in “Dear Cousin”; A Charted Genealogy of the Descendants of Anneke Jans Bogardus (1605-1663) to the 5th Generation“)
This is an e-mail I recently responded to regarding this topic:

I believe many have tried to latch onto the Anneke Jans estate, but few, if any, have succeeded. There are plenty of stories on the internet about those who have tried, which you have most likely seen. John H. Fonda (1828-1915) and wife Mary tried to stake their claim based on speculation/wishful thinking and fell flat… in fact their lawyer was brought up on fraud charges. I think the Fonda/Trinity case got a lot of notoriety in the newspapers because of the scandal. Funny thing is, according to my research, John was not even a descendant of Anneke Jans. There is a connection to our line from Neeltje E. Briese (1739-1820) who was a g-g-granddaughter of Anneke. Neeltje married Adam Douw Fonda (1736-1808) in 1759, but John’s branch takes off well before that point. I am connected to the famous Fonda’s through this very marriage, about five generation up, but we don’t know each other. So, in other words, both the Hollywood Fonda‘s and my Fonda line are both descended from Anneke Jans, but John H. Fonda‘s line is not. Either way, none of us stand to gain anything from the connection, except maybe bragging rights… ha ha.
